The Teaching and Learning of Vectors in ‘A’ Level Pure Mathematics
The study will focus on the following research questions:
- What are the knowledge/concepts in vectors that students gain in their past school years?
- What are the problems/difficulties students encountered in learning and understanding vectors?
- What are the teaching strategies that teachers used in teaching vectors?
- In what way can modern technology enhance the learning of vectors?
Methods:
Target group: “A” level students in Pure Mathematics
1. Pilot study: Questionnaires and feedbacks from students and teachers.
2. Interviews and classroom observations on learning and teaching techniques in my school and 2 other schools.
3. Pretest to check foundations of students and identifying problems.
4. Looking for other factors: textbooks, syllabus, exam questions, environment and attitudes in studying vectors
4. Creating Alternatives (e.g. manipulative, IT, graphical views of vectors) to teach vectors through group discussion with teachers.
5. Be a participant (Teacher) in teaching one of the sample.
6. Post test to analyse the strategies.
7. Analysis of results and drawing conclusions.
8. Reteach using other strategies.
